Yahoo! Search returns a list of web pages containing the words you entered. These results are a combination of relevant web pages and web sites provided by Yahoo! Search and the Yahoo! Directory.
The Yahoo! Directory is a human-created and maintained library of web sites organized into categories and subcategories. Yahoo! editors review these sites for potential inclusion in the Directory, and to evaluate the best place to list them.
For example, you can see a full listing of general sites related to dogs by visiting Yahoo!'s Dogs category. Sites about more specific dog-related subjects are listed under appropriate subcategories. The Yahoo! Directory is helpful when:

• You're not sure how to describe what you want, or you're searching for words with multiple meanings. Behind the scenes, our editors build in synonyms, cross-references, and relationships between subjects. For example, when you're ready for your close up, you might search for "casting" to get an audition. Your results will include sites from the related Directory category:
Talent and Crew > Talent Agencies
You can browse this list of sites and subcategories, or search for "casting" services just within Talent Agencies, rather than on the entire Web. This guarantees your results won't refer to another kind of casting, such as plaster or die casting.
• You want a better understanding of the subject you're searching for. For example, search the Directory for "bugs" and you'll see:
Arthropods > Insects
In this category, you'll find listings for individual creatures from antlions to wasps, along with such topics as entomophagy (insects as food) and pest management. Web Results for "bugs" alone will give you a much narrower view.
And any time you see a Directory-listed site on your Web Results page, you'll know it met our standards for inclusion. Just look for results with a link labeled "Category:" under the description. Click on the category links to go to the Directory and browse a collection of sites on the same subject.
